After hunger, cold and disease, the main concern of the POWs, apart from the extreme conditions of imprisonment in general, was the distance from home, from one’s loved ones. The difficulty of communication between POWs—who were often absent for years—and their families is perhaps one of the least comprehensible aspects of wartime captivity for future generations, given its dramatic psychological impact.
