Dairy Sector Constraints and Development in Africa
摘要
The dairy sector in Africa faces a myriad of constraints that hinder its potential to meet the growing demand for dairy products. This chapter provides an in-depth analysis of the challenges affecting dairy production across the continent, including genetic limitations, health issues, and suboptimal breeding systems. Genetic constraints, such as low productivity of indigenous breeds, are exacerbated by inadequate breeding programs and limited access to high-quality genetic resources. Health challenges, particularly diseases like mastitis and tick-borne infections, significantly reducing milk yield and quality. Additionally, financial constraints lead to many farmers lacking access to credit, insurance, and investment opportunities. Marketing challenges, including poor infrastructure and limited access to markets, further impede the sector’s growth. Research and development (RandD) efforts are not well funded and poorly coordinated, leading to a lack of innovation and adaptation of modern technologies. This chapter also explores recommended strategies to overcome these constraints, including the development of sustainable breeding programs, improved animal health management, enhanced financial support mechanisms, and the establishment of robust marketing frameworks. By addressing these challenges, the African dairy sector can enhance its productivity, contribute to food security, and improve the livelihoods of millions of people across the continent.
