Who Spends and What Counts? A Critical Review of Tourist Expenditures
摘要
Tourist expenditures play a central role in the economic development of tourist destinations, as it influences planning, public policy, and business strategies. However, despite its economic importance, this topic has been little studied in academic literature. Existing studies often neglect key interdisciplinary aspects such as psychological factors, technological mediations, and sustainability concerns. This conceptual fragmentation limits our understanding of how tourist expenditures behaviors evolve in the face of broader societal and environmental changes. To address this gap, this study conducts a bibliometric study of 125 articles indexed in Scopus between 2015 and 2024. Using VOSviewer for cluster mapping and R Studio for trend modeling, the results reveal a negative annual growth rate of −3.39%, low collaboration intensity (2.8 co-authors per document), and thematic dispersion across regions and disciplines. These results confirm the fragmented nature of research and highlight the need for more integrated approaches. By identifying intellectual structures, regional axes, and methodological trends, this study lays the foundation for future interdisciplinary research and policy innovations in the field of tourist expenditures.
