Our factual beliefs are embedded in meaningful narratives, which is why people cling to their beliefs even in the face of contrary evidence. Stories are cognitively, existentially, and historically prior to arguments. The invention of written language is important mainly for making possible a culture of argumentation. Stories are meant to be heard, while arguments are meant to be read. What are called “conspiracy theories” are actually stories about deception in high places.
