The two fundamental kinds of speech acts are arguments and stories. I compare the logic of argumentation with the poetics of narrative. With examples from political speeches, I show how arguments create knowledge and stories create meaning. Although knowledge is created only by argument, stories are essential for the diffusion of knowledge.
