Frequently, variants of the same business process are run in different organisations. Approaches have been proposed that allow managing process variants and reusing process models, i.e. changes can be applied centrally instead of applying them to each process variant. However, these approaches often extend modelling notations requiring proprietary tools. Therefore, we present modelling patterns for different types of variability in processes as solutions for this recurring problem by solely relying on standard BPMN 2.0, i.e. common BPMN 2.0 modelling tools and process engines can be used. As part of the evaluation, two processes encompassing variability were implemented and executed on two process engines demonstrating the technical soundness of the patterns. In addition, results from expert interviews indicate that the patterns are useful, relevant, and easy to use.

摘要
