Dermal Wellness: Managing Skin Conditions Throughout Motherhood
摘要
Pregnancy and the postpartum period are characterized by significant physiological, hormonal, and immunological changes that affect the skin in various ways. While most dermatological manifestations are benign and self-limiting, some may represent pregnancy-specific dermatoses or exacerbations of preexisting skin conditions. Common chronic dermatoses, such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, may either flare or improve during this period, necessitating individualized monitoring and management. Distinguishing physiological changes from pathological ones is crucial to avoid unnecessary interventions and to reduce maternal anxiety. This chapter synthesizes the normal cutaneous adaptations of pregnancy; the classification, clinical patterns, diagnosis, and management of pregnancy-specific dermatoses; and pragmatic treatment pathways for common chronic dermatoses during gestation and lactation. Therapeutic choices are framed by safety profiles and established perinatal guidance, emphasizing topical-first strategies, judicious use of systemic agents, and interprofessional care.
