Self Beyond Identity
摘要
This chapter contributes to the dynamic conceptualization of Self by pursuing two main aims. First, it elaborates on the dialectical relationship between I and Non-I, emphasizing their interdependence. Second, it proposes a renewed depiction of this relationship through the metaphor of a double helix, highlighting processes of bordering and tension. The chapter explores the movement from “Self → Extension of Self” as a dynamic interplay of resistance, negotiation, and transformation—where extensions are experienced as breath-taking moments of internalization and externalization. The term selfing is introduced to capture the ongoing, processual nature of Self. Rather than viewing Self as a fixed entity to be discovered or lost, this approach portrays it as a continuous becoming: a rhythmic, breathing movement between I and Non-I. This conceptualization invites a shift from static representations toward a view of the Self as an ever-evolving, tension-filled process of transformation and exemplified through the case of becoming a psychologist.
