The Psychological Richness of Aging: The Interplay of Gains and Losses
摘要
An in-depth analysis of the dynamic relationship between psychological gains and losses in the later stages of life is presented. The following losses are described: (a) decline of health and the increasing frequency of chronic diseases; (b) loss of social connections leading to a higher risk of loneliness; and (c) decrease of openness to new experiences, a personality trait that refers to open-mindedness and curiosity. Then, the focus is on three gains: (a) finding gains in losses, (b) discovering significance in our insignificance, and (c) developing a beginner’s mind that enables us to internalize other people, elements of nature, and objects, allowing them to connect with our inner self.
