Representations on “Discovery”, Enslavement, and Colonialism Through Cabo Verde School Textbooks
摘要
Cabo Verde is an African archipelago composed of ten islands off the western coast of the African continent. The formation of Cabo Verdean society is historically rooted in three interconnected phenomena: (i) the European imperial expansion, initiated by Portugal in the fifteenth century; (ii) the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans; and (iii) the enduring impact of colonialism. This chapter examines how these three historical processes—framed through the concepts of “discovery”, enslavement, and colonialism—are represented in Cabo Verdean school textbooks. Drawing on materials from different educational levels, the analysis highlights how these themes are constructed and transmitted through official narratives. The chapter investigates how the legacies of slavery and colonialism are either acknowledged or silenced in the discourses shaping Cabo Verdean post-colonial identity.
