A World of Information: The Dataistic Episteme
摘要
This chapter charts the development and content of the dataistic episteme. Premised on a conceptualisation of reality, including humanity, as a vast reservoir of information that can be harvested, processed and modified to produce desired outputs, dataistic power-knowledge has some of its deepest roots in early computer science, molecular biology and behaviour modification. This chapter traces its trajectory into an onrushing future, exploring the advanced technologies that are currently reshaping our world. As developments in artificial intelligence, genetics and surveillance systems learn to map, manipulate and modify life with increasing precision, they open up unprecedented possibilities and generate new forms of power. These are not merely extensions of earlier forms, but qualitatively distinct means of control that operate through technologies of synthetic selection, recursive refinement and surreptitious surveillance—the particulars and repercussions of which are explored here.
