Continuing this perspectives-taking exploration, incorporating the arts into engineering education is posited to nurture empathy, creativity, and the holistic problem-solving essential for the engineers of the future. Arts integration in STEM, or STEAM, refers to the inclusion of fine arts, specifically visual, theatrical, dance, and music arts, in conjunction with other core STEM content learning. Arts integration can support STEM discipline learning by fostering relevance, capturing student interest, activating and reifying neural networks to call in multiple intelligences, and constructing a deeper understanding of both the arts and core content. The National Core Arts Standards provide guidance for art instruction, which can be included as learning objectives within other courses to create an integrated lesson, assignment, or assessment. This chapter provides an overview of STEAM, highlighting its natural connections to various engineering disciplines, and advocates for its use in the engineering classroom to drive innovation and problem-solving. Drawing from diverse sources of inspiration, including art, literature, music, and nature, engineers can generate innovative ideas and approaches that transcend traditional boundaries.

摘要
