How Does the Perspectives-Taking Approach Work?
摘要
Many real-world problems and opportunities require interdisciplinary approaches (e.g., taking different perspectives) for effective solutions. Perspectives-taking helps engineering students see connections between disciplines and understand how technical and nontechnical disciplinary knowledge can be integrated to tackle multifaceted issues. This chapter provides an overview of how valuing multiple perspectives (specifically, bio-inspired design and the arts) alongside the entrepreneurial mindset can support novice engineers and encourage broader participation and retention among persons traditionally underrepresented in engineering, including women and minorities, perhaps due to their being more service oriented and interested in improving the human condition.
