This chapter examines the ontological framing of the ethical challenges that emerge from using and implementing AI in response to the profound transformations of the Earth brought about by human beings. I argue that the employment of AI to solve the issues of the Anthropocene entails ontological trade-offs that go beyond its foreseeable empirical outcomes, and that signal a transformation in our way of ‘being-in-the-world’. I understand that this is a shift that must be critically examined through an ethical lens, but without compromising its deep ontological horizon. My aim is to demonstrate how, in using AI as a solution for a myriad of environmental challenges, the very status of human beings—whose ontological privilege lies within the duty of care and responsibility towards the world they inhabit—is at stake.

摘要
