Cryptogenic cirrhosis (CC) is a significant, though less common, condition of the liver. Its categorization as a separate entity has been plagued by the variances of a diagnosis of exclusion. With the passage of time, the proportion diagnosed with CC has declined, while incidences of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) have increased. This is likely due to the advances in diagnostic techniques and standardized histopathologic classification systems. Given these advances, it is likely that a cirrhotic process that is truly heretofore unknown exists, though in decreasing frequency. Diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis, therefore, demand distinction from other common entities. Treatment for CC largely depends upon the degree of cirrhosis, liver function, and associated sequelae, such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

摘要
