This research examines protection and revealing of cultural heritage assets as a tool of sustainable development in isolated areas, focusing on Chios, a Greek island of the Aegean Sea. The island’s watchtowers, known as vigles, consist of a significant cultural heritage element not only of Chios’ but also of many Aegean and Mediterranean regions. These historical structures constitute an important part of the fortification architecture of Chios, defining the spatial and urban nexus of the island even nowadays. The aim of this study is to protect, promote and preserve the vigles of Chios, attempting to reintroduce them to the local population and visitors, and interconnect them with the island’s cultural and natural landscape. Methodologically, the cultural and natural heritage of the island was identified and documented through field observation and bibliographic research. Additionally, vigles were identified, documented, mapped and categorized based on their legal status, state of preservation, and accessibility. Subsequently, different approaches of vigles’ protection and revealing are proposed per case, while vigles of the significant areas of Elinta, Emporios and Agia Dinami are incorporated into the cultural routes network of Chios, acting as pilots for the sustainable preservation of the island’s unique fortified architecture.
