Vaccination is one of the primary ways the immune system prevents or decreases the severity of common diseases of cattle. There are several different types of vaccines that are available for use in cattle. Continued research in basic immunology and innovative vaccine options will offer new options for vaccination programs in cattle, many of which start at the earliest stages of an animal’s life. Specific knowledge of mechanisms, applications, timing, and vaccine platforms is needed to avoid adverse reactions.
