Ecotoxicological Study of Canned Tuna Organic Waste
摘要
The fish processing industry generates significant waste, including heads, tails, fins, and viscera, with much of it still ending up in landfills despite efforts to convert it into animal feed. Tuna canning, which discards 60–70% of the fish, exacerbates this issue, leading to resource inefficiency and environmental concerns. The Blue Economy promotes sustainable development, emphasizing better waste management practices. In 2022, Portugal’s canned fish production reached 56,624 tons, a 25.8% increase from 2012. However, research on the ecotoxicological impact of canning waste remains limited. This study aims to assess the environmental effects of organic waste from an Azorean canning company using organisms from three trophic levels. The results will help understand its ecological impact and support sustainable waste management strategies. Insights from this research will aid policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers in promoting circular economy practice.
