Municipal solid waste (MSW) management in Angola, especially in Luanda, faces major environmental and public health challenges due to rapid urban population growth and increased waste generation. In Luanda’s capital city, large quantities of MSW are sent to landfills daily without any energy recovery. This study evaluates the feasibility of improving MSW management in Luanda by harnessing energy from landfill gas or biogas produced through anaerobic digestion to produce electricity. Laboratory and pilot-scale experiments were conducted using biodegradable waste collected in Luanda to estimate biogas production through anaerobic digestion. These results were compared with in situ biogas measurements from the landfill. The estimated biogas yields over 20 years from both methods, along with the respective gas compositions, were used to assess the potential for electricity generation and evaluate the technology's economic viability to convert biogas into electricity.

摘要
