Countering the Narrative of Gender Diverse Youth in Heartbreak High and Sex Education
摘要
This chapter highlights how two internationally successful Netflix youth-focused series, Sex Education and Heartbreak High, position gender diverse youth of different ethnicities as admirable and likeable characters, directly countering the pathologizing discourse and stereotypes that have persisted in media for over a century. While the portrayals in these series are by no means comprehensive or flawless, this chapter demonstrates how the empathetic depictions offer an opportunity for a wide audience to develop understanding and compassion for the struggles and obstacles that gender diverse youth face—a crucial first step in rectifying epistemic injustice.
