This introductory chapter offers examples from U.S. shows Black-ish (2014–2022, ABC) and Steven Universe (2013–2019 & 2020, Cartoon Network) in order to illuminate some inherent challenges of contemporary television’s approach to youth viewers and to issues facing today’s youth. This introduction focuses on the fraught position of youth vis-à-vis global precarity, politics, and conflict; the way youth construct their own identities in relation to or by resisting social norms and trends; and how television attempts to address youth’s continual exposure to social, political, and environmental crises in all media forms, as well as in their own lives.
