Research and Education in Surgical Nursing
摘要
For a variety of reasons, education and research play a crucial role in surgical nursing, their combined effect of having the potential to enhance the overall quality of patient care in the surgical setting. Education, which is vital for the professional development of surgical nurses, is essential to gain the knowledge and skills required for the delivery of effective patient care in surgical nursing, including technical skills enhancement, development of leadership skills, and critical thinking abilities. Research has a key role to play across all aspects of clinical nursing, and surgical nursing is no exception. Intricately linked with evidence-based practice, research can provide the best evidence to inform and shape evidence-based practice. For example, in surgical nursing, the use of appropriate assessment tools in venous thromboembolism (DVT) prophylaxis, when based on high-quality research, can reduce the risk of surgical complications. When incorporated appropriately by the surgical nurse, evidence-based practice has the potential to enhance the delivery of person-centered care. This chapter explores some contemporary issues related to education and research, all within the surgical nursing setting. Including educational pathways for surgical nurses, the role of research and evidence-based practice in surgical nursing and exploring perspectives on how surgical nurses can translate high-quality research into their everyday practice. It is hoped that this overview of education and research in surgical nursing will provide justification for its importance within the nursing profession.
