Enhancing Quality of Life Through Enterostomal Therapy Nursing (Stoma Care Nursing): Challenges and Solutions
摘要
Stoma care, often underestimated in traditional nursing practice, has experienced substantial advancements as a specialized subdiscipline. Historically perceived as an unpleasant aspect of care, stoma management presents numerous physical and psychological challenges for clients. These challenges include skin complications, fear, embarrassment, and uncertainty about the future, often exacerbated by negative attitudes from family members and relatives. Effective stoma management, intensive counseling, and supportive care are crucial in fostering stoma acceptance, alleviating stress, and improving clients’ quality of life (QoL). The development of the stoma care nursing specialty in Hong Kong during the 1980s, led by a group of dedicated specialists, has resulted in significant improvements in stoma care appliances and accessories. Specialized training enables stoma care nurses to successfully manage a majority of stoma and peristomal complications, substantially reducing issues such as leakage, dermatitis, and allergies. This chapter explores the evolution of stoma care nursing, focusing on the critical role stoma care nurses play in clients’ lives. It examines common complications clients may encounter, and the problem-solving strategies employed by stoma care nurses, illustrated with practical examples. The chapter also highlights the growing recognition and appreciation of stoma care nurses within the healthcare community, emphasizing their contributions to enhancing clients’ QoL through specialized care.
