The food packaging industry increased its prioritising of sustainability to meet the demands for eco-friendly products by consumers. In line with that, this review explores the alignment of various materials and designs of food packaging with consumer preferences. The review process involved synthesising data from 22 records published between 2019 and 2025. The selected studies mostly focused on packaging materials such as plastics, metals, papers and glass. It also discusses design attributes such as resealability and clear information. Main findings indicate that biodegradable materials and designs with clear information align well with consumer preferences. However, plastics and multi-layered packaging design present challenges due to their negative environmental impact and issues with recycling. Plus, consumer preferences usually conflict with sustainability goals, which highlights the need for balanced trade-offs. The significance of this study is its potential to guide the development of packaging solutions that balance consumer needs with environmental impacts.
