Heritage for an Oceanic Culture: The Essential Role of the Past in Ocean Literacy
摘要
Understanding humanity’s historical relationship with the Ocean is essential for comprehending contemporary interactions and the Ocean’s significance globally. Ocean Literacy, a multidimensional effort to enhance public engagement with the Ocean, is deeply rooted in this human-nature relationship. Heritage, which reflects these connections, enriches Ocean Literacy with diverse perspectives, preserving traditional practices, beliefs, and knowledge linked to the sea. In June 2024, the integration of cultural heritage as a critical element for fostering a deeper connection between humans and the Ocean was recognised in the Venice Declaration for Ocean Literacy in Action. This chapter examines how heritage shapes Ocean culture and promotes Ocean Literacy for marine conservation and sustainable livelihoods by integrating traditional knowledge, reviewing preservation frameworks, and outlining strategies for effective communication and interdisciplinary collaboration in conservation efforts.
