Ocean Literacy Through Exploring the Ocean as a World of Sound
摘要
The Ocean, a world distinct from terrestrial habitats, offers a unique acoustic environment shaped by its density, salinity, pressure, and temperature. Sound travels four times faster in water than in air, making it a central feature for understanding marine ecosystems. Ocean soundscapes, a mix of biological, physical, and anthropogenic sounds, indicate ecosystem health and biodiversity. This chapter explores how the shared exploration of these soundscapes fosters Ocean Literacy, enhances understanding of marine environments, and promotes conservation. The Ocean World of Sound (WOS) initiative highlights the effectiveness of Passive Acoustic Monitoring as a non-invasive, cost-effective method to study marine soundscapes and engage communities. Through innovative outreach efforts, including workshops, the 30-Day Ocean Sound Challenge, and citizen science projects, WOS empowers communities to actively contribute to research. By harnessing the immersive nature of sound, this initiative fosters emotional connections and motivates conservation efforts. Aligned with the UN Ocean Decade’s goals—especially Challenge 10, which seeks to restore humanity’s relationship with the Ocean—this chapter demonstrates the transformative potential of sound to strengthen people’s connections with their marine ecosystems.
