Ocean Literacy in Formal Education: The Case of the Network of European Blue Schools
摘要
This chapter provides an overview of how Ocean Literacy is integrated into formal education at all levels through a grassroots approach facilitated by the European Commission (EC) and Ocean Literacy experts. The Network of European Blue Schools (NEBS) is currently the largest blue school network globally, with more than 600 members from EU Member States and associated countries. The concept was developed as one of three pillars of the EU4Ocean Coalition, which aims to unite Europeans’ Ocean Literacy voices and efforts to make the Ocean a concern for everyone. To present the development and evolution of the Network, cover the milestones of this initiative such as the initial survey and focus group meetings, curriculum analysis, the handbook for teachers, the development of online courses and other resources for teachers, support of local initiatives and networks, and creation of funding opportunities for Blue Schools within the framework of 3 EU funded Horizon projects. The NEBS applications dataset is utilised to explore the Network composition in terms of school levels and types (kindergarten, Primary, middle, secondary, VET, special education), connection to school curricula (natural sciences, culture, physical education, etc.), geographic distribution (coastal, inland, sea basins, etc.).
