From Ocean Literacy to the Sustainable Blue Economy: Empowering Youth Through SOI Foundation’s Blue Futures Pathways Global Initiative
摘要
This chapter explores the growing importance of the Sustainable Blue Economy (SBE) in addressing global challenges related to climate change, resource use, innovation and economic development, with a focus on empowering youth in Canada through water-related career navigation. The Blue Futures Pathways (BFP) program, led by the Students on Ice Foundation, connects young people, particularly those from Indigenous, underrepresented, and remote communities, with education, mentorship, and career opportunities across the Ocean, freshwater, wastewater, and cryosphere sectors. Through national and international partnerships, experiential learning, and youth-led initiatives, BFP is helping shape a more inclusive, resilient, and innovative water workforce. This chapter highlights personal stories from BFP participants that demonstrate the transformative impact of access, representation, and community-driven programming. As BFP expands its reach, it continues to contribute meaningfully to water-related education, climate resilience, and inclusive youth leadership across Canada and within the broader context of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
