This chapter examines youth empowerment and capacity-building programmes through the concrete examples of the Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassador and Youth for SDGs Programmes onboard Peace Boat’s global voyages. It situates these initiatives within the context of the UN Decade of Ocean Science and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlighting the interconnections between SDG 14 and other SDGs. The chapter demonstrates how educational programmes onboard a ship can serve as effective platforms for advancing Ocean Literacy, with time at sea offering opportunities for workshops, lectures, and deeper engagement with the Ocean, and port visits enabling hands-on learning experiences. It also explores how Peace Boat’s longstanding experience in peace education has informed the development of programmes that emphasise the link between humanity and the Ocean and aim to foster behavioural change and action in participants. Particular focus is given to the inclusion of youth from Small Island Developing States (SIDS), whose first-hand experiences of the Ocean and climate crises strengthen calls for urgent action. By fostering cross-regional exchanges among youth, Peace Boat promotes solidarity, leadership development, and collective advocacy on a global scale.
