Power Princess and Hyperion: The Promises of Utopia
摘要
This chapter focuses on how the two most powerful members of the Squadron Supreme—Power Princess and Hyperion—are not only the team leaders, but also intertextually linked to their well-known DC counterparts, Wonder Woman and Superman. In so doing, Gruenwald writes into the series unmistakably positive results of the Utopia Program that push back against the utopia calculus that I previously discussed—i.e., a common, if not knee-jerk, reaction that stresses the terrible costs of the social dreaming of utopianism and the importance of forestalling utopian desire. The unmistakable advancements that are the results of the Utopia Program are consistent from start to finish, and, in this state of exception where the Squadron members are acting as vigilants, the Utopia Program makes the United States an objectively better nation, not an authoritarian one. In the end, Gruenwald makes it difficult to dismiss the social dreaming of utopianism.
