The Involvement of Copper Deficiency in the Pathogenesis of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
摘要
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a type of chronic liver disease that occurs due to lipid accumulation in the hepatocytes. The prevalence of NAFLD is increasing in Middle Eastern and Western nations that have been attributed to the increases in obesity, diabetes, and type 2 diabetes. While dietary factors are implicated in the pathogenesis of NAFLD, the deficiency of copper has emerged as an important contributor in the pathophysiology of NAFLD. Accordingly, in this chapter, we discuss the mechanisms involved in the development of NAFLD and how copper status has a role to play. In addition, the complex interplay between copper status, oxidative stress, inflammation, and fibrosis in the development of NAFLD is described. Furthermore, some novel interventions for the treatment of NAFLD are also discussed.
