The climate crisis is a complex issue rooted in anthropogenic activities, particularly those driven by colonialism and carbon-intensive capitalism. This crisis disproportionately impacts racially and economically marginalized communities whose voices and experiences are often sidelined in mainstream climate discourse and educational opportunities. Addressing these disparities requires a transformative approach to climate and environmental education, one that integrates a racially and economically conscious approach to social justice and environmental sustainability. As such, this work proposes an Afrofuturistic Climate-Environmental (ACE) Justice Literacy framework to drive forward transformative transdisciplinary education. ACE reimagines climate education through six guiding principles that emphasize safe learning environments, integrating socio-political-cultural contexts, honoring African histories, rethinking human–environment relationships, mitigating climate anxiety through radical hope, and leveraging historical knowledge for future-oriented activism. The ACE approach advocates for a racialized perspective in climate education, recognizing the interconnectedness of climate and racial injustices and the need to engage Black voices. Building from Afrofuturism, including fostering a Black radical imagination and pedagogy, ACE aims to empower students, challenge dominant narratives, and promote an inclusive and just vision for the future. In this chapter, we utilize ACE to proffer tangible strategies that can be used within community and school settings to transform climate education.
