Education plays an important role in giving young people skills and competencies to become knowledgeable, critical, and active citizens concerning climate change. This chapter argues for the importance of including critical emotional awareness (CEA) in climate change education. Because studies show that many young people feel hopelessness concerning the global future and experience a high degree of helplessness, it is argued that it is vital to promote emotional competencies where young people learn how to turn common difficult emotions in relation to climate change—like worry, anxiety, and anger—into positive forces for learning and engagement. Psychological theories and knowledge about the importance of acknowledging and verbalizing emotions and coping with emotions in a constructive manner are important components of the concept of CEA. In addition, this concept includes insights from critical theories about emotions in which emotions are seen as influenced by cultural norms and power relations. These are also important to consider to understand how different societal actors are trying to influence young people in relation to this problem. Practical implications for formal and informal education are discussed.

摘要
