Tourism as a Nationalist Teaching Tool
摘要
Trauma is not just passed on from generation to generation by the citizens of the state. It is also transmitted to the outside world through so-called “tourist” experiences. The chapter illustrates the role of tourism as a tool of nationalist socialization, feeding into the securitization of identities. For many, tourism is synonymous with hospitality, focusing on entertaining the visitors so they may return in the future. It is also a money-making opportunity for business owners, small and large. This chapter argues that tourism presents an opportunity to teach visitors, outsiders, about the negative historical experiences of that nation. Some tourist sights, specifically history museums, play a fundamental role in the tourist experience. Museums also serve as a tool for socialization to the local population. In my visits to Greece, Armenia, Turkey, North Macedonia, and India, people in the tourist industry are prepared to teach visitors about the country’s traumatic national narrative, functioning as an integral part of a speech act.
