Osteoarthritis: Advanced Techniques, Arthrodesis, and Ankle Impingement
摘要
Ankle osteoarthritis is an escalating concern corresponding to up to 4% of all patients with osteoarthritis (Herrera-Pérez M, González-Martín D, Vallejo-Márquez M, Godoy-Santos AL, Valderrabano V, Tejero S. Ankle Osteoarthritis Aetiology. J Clin Med. 2021 Sep 29;10(19):4489. https://doi.org/10.3390/jcm10194489 ). Unlike other forms of osteoarthritis, the majority of ankle arthritis cases are post-traumatic, commonly affecting a younger population. These characteristics can exert major negative impact on both the quality of life and functional capabilities of affected individuals. Effectively addressing ankle arthritis requires a step-wise approach, with surgical management becoming paramount in advanced cases, represented mainly by ankle arthrodesis being the main intervention in young active patients where total ankle prosthesis is seldom recommended.
