The Purpose of Imagination
摘要
Foresight prepares us for the plausible, but it remains bounded by what we can already see. This chapter argues that in an environment defined by exponential change, linear analysis alone leads to strategic nearsightedness. To escape this trap, architects of change cultivate imagination not as a creative luxury, but as a muscle for survival. By engaging with uncomfortable thinkers and using counterfactuals, they can distinguish between risk (which requires flexibility) and uncertainty (which demands resilience). While flexibility allows for space to adapt and adjust, resilience is the ability to reinvent when your whole world has collapsed. Ultimately, imagination serves as the final insurance policy against disruption, enabling organizations to reframe constraints and invent what comes next before necessity forces their hand.
