In today’s global context, the rapid proliferation of AI has triggered profound changes across industries, yet the concept of AI colonialism remains underexplored, particularly concerning marginalised populations in developing countries. This essay investigates the implications of AI colonialism for female workers in Indonesia’s app-based labour market, focusing specifically on safety and harassment issues. The study highlights how AI colonialism intensifies the dual burden faced by women who juggle care responsibilities with gig employment. Employing focus group discussions (FGDs) with female gig workers in Yogyakarta, the research reveals how AI colonialism perpetuates gender inequalities and reinforces patriarchal norms. By examining these dynamics, the study underscores the need for gender-sensitive policies and social protections to address the challenges faced by female gig workers in Indonesia and contribute to a deeper scholarly understanding of technology’s role in perpetuating gender inequality.

摘要
