The chapter begins with an introductory setting of the scene, to allow the reader to get acquainted with some social considerations in approaching the study of artificial intelligence. The first section presents the Critical Political Economy framework, criticisms levied against the framework, and its approach to technology. The second section draws out the various definitions of what it means to be talking about the ‘South’, and engages with scholarship on Southernness. It then explores criticisms of Southern theorising, and presents Southern approaches to technology. The third section places the two frameworks discussed thus far in dialogue, and attempts to tease out commonalities and incompatibilities. The section then explores some common conceptual frames, before moving on to present a Southern Standpoint to Technology, including AI. It does so by thinking through the possibilities of engaging with geosocial location as a standpoint to the global as seen in the case of AI technologies and associated businesses. The chapter then weaves together the contributions presented in this collection as themes.
