6 DoF Robot Tool Path Generator for the Purpose of High-Precision Engraving of Unknown Surfaces

Our research has resulted in the development of a high-flexibility low volume robotic application for engraving on curved surfaces using an industrial angular robot. Designed specifically for part labeling purposes, our system effectively engraves on various curved surfaces, such as pipes. To achieve accurate engraving, we utilize a 3D sensor to capture point cloud data, enabling precise localization of the surface to be engraved within the robot’s environment. An algorithm facilitates the transfer of text or vectors onto the engraved part, ensuring accurate translation onto the curved surface during engraving. Integration of a laser sensor enhances precision by measuring the generated path and calculating necessary corrections for high accuracy in the engraving result. Our comprehensive system and methodology provide a reliable solution for high-quality engraving on curved surfaces using robotic technology, opening up new possibilities for part labeling across various industries.
