Educating Faculty and Trainees About Microaggressions
摘要
Little has been written regarding if, when, and how to address microaggressions directed from patients to psychiatrists. We illustrate examples of microaggressions directed at psychiatrists, outline considerations for addressing them in clinical encounters and supervisory relationships, provide a framework for how to intervene, and present a case study of a microaggression in the context of psychiatric treatment and corresponding clinical supervision. This framework holds promise for equipping residency program directors, attending psychiatrists, and trainees (psychiatry residents and fellows) with skills to intervene in such interactions, thereby enhancing the therapeutic relationship and outcomes.
