The Future of Zoos?
摘要
What role should zoos play in the twenty-first century and beyond? As public awareness of animal welfare and environmental issues grow, zoos are already being reimagined as conservation and education hubs rather than entertainment venues. But if zoos were to disappear, would virtual experiences, documentaries, and eco-tourism be enough to inspire compassion and curiosity about wildlife? These alternatives, while valuable, often lack the emotional connection and accessibility that real-life encounters provide. Good progressive zoos will be propelling conservation forwards, supporting species reintroduction, biodiversity education, and climate awareness. They will have naturalistic, ecosystem-style enclosures, offer more authentic and high-welfare habitats, and help visitors understand the interconnectedness of life as well as encourage their participation. Good progressive zoos are well on the way to being the future zoo, but there is always room for improvement.
