This chapter presents a reflective autobiographical account of Professor Samantha Ward’s career trajectory in the field of zoo animal welfare and legislation. Tracing her journey from early childhood experiences with animals to her current role as a Professor at Nottingham Trent University, the narrative highlights the interplay between personal motivation, professional development, and scientific inquiry. Initially aspiring to become a veterinary surgeon, Sam’s academic path shifted towards zoology, culminating in a BSc in Applied Zoology, an MSc in Animal Behaviour, and a PhD in Animal Behaviour and Welfare. Her professional experiences span practical zookeeping, research, and academic leadership, with significant contributions to zoo animal welfare science. The chapter details her hands-on work with diverse species, her emotional and ethical challenges within zoo environments, and her transition into research and policy advisory roles. Notably, Sam has contributed to the development of the UK Zoo Standards (2025) as a member of the Zoo Experts Committee and collaborates with international welfare organisations such as Wild Welfare.
