Sherwood Washburn’s Pragmatic Evolutionary Theory
摘要
Sherwood Washburn’s “New Physical Anthropology” transformed the study of human evolution within the field of anthropology. This approach shifted the focus from static fossil remains to the dynamic interplay of form, function, genes, and behavior. More than just an expansion of tools and methods, Washburn introduced a new epistemological framework, one that closely resembles Pragmatic Philosophy. This chapter centers on a course Washburn taught late in his career, where he synthesized decades of scholarship and articulated a matured vision of the “New Physical Anthropology.” By analyzing these lectures alongside key writings in American and French Pragmatism, I reveal philosophical continuities between Washburn’s approach and Pragmatic thought. I argue that this perspective remains highly relevant, and further development of a Pragmatic Evolutionary Theory would deepen our understanding of both our evolutionary past and its implications for the present.
