There is heightened awareness of the high incidence and prevalence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in the last decade. Prevention of VTE by rigorous application of thromboprophylaxis protocols has significantly decreased hospital-associated VTE, while the convenience of direct oral anticoagulants has gone a long way in decreasing recurrent VTE. Extended anticoagulation has mandated follow-up of patients with the need for regular bleeding risk assessment and input in case of surgical and radiological interventions.
