Science communication has increasingly embraced audiovisual media to engage broader publics, driven by technological advances and changing societal expectations toward more participatory models. However, academic research on audiovisual science communication lags behind practice, particularly regarding narrative strategies, public reception, and cultural inclusion. This systematic review examines audiovisual science communication literature with emphasis on the Portuguese context, identifying key challenges and opportunities in the use of audiovisual tools for public engagement. Although international best practices demonstrate benefits of combining scientific rigor with creative storytelling, implementation remains uneven. The findings highlight the urgent need for interdisciplinary training, policy support, and context-sensitive communication practices to realize the potential of audiovisual media in promoting more inclusive and participatory scientific culture.

摘要
