To increase production, in 2023 INALUM upgraded an existing potline, which includes adding 5 brand-new Pot Tending MachinesPot tending machine (PTMs). Unfortunately, the new PTMs missed a crucial feature: the vacuum ejectorEjector system had no capability to blow air from the crucibleCrucible’s nozzle. This is important to prevent accidental bath ingestion resulting in clogging and costly crucibleCrucible repair. This resulted in the decision to re-instate two old PTMs slated for disposal, just for metal tappingMetal tapping in the new potline, with a total of 7 PTMs working in a single potline, adding to maintenance workload. Adding the blow capability was achieved by installing another valve, which redirected the air back into the crucibleCrucible when activated. The control is designed in such a way to ensure minimal disruption of established procedure. This modification greatly reduced accidental bath ingestion on new PTMs, eliminating the need to utilize old PTMs for metal tappingMetal tapping.
