In particular, the long-term management of bauxite residueBauxite residue sites requires emphasis for safe remediation and the potential for the recovery and reuse of the chemical components found therein. In Jamaica, the closure planning objectives are evolving and industry initiatives such as the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) has to be internalized in the context of social and environmental objectives, the regulatory framework and scarce funding to stimulate reuse options. The need for coherence between environmental monitoring objectives and key sustainabilitySustainability indicators, such as protection of water supply and working with communities, drives the environmental management framework for bauxite residueBauxite residue in Jamaica.
