Applications and Technologies for Bauxite Residue in Brazil and Worldwide: A Literature Review
摘要
This review aimed to gather quantitative and qualitative information regarding the use of bauxite residueBauxite residue in Brazil and worldwide. A systematic search was conducted using the keywords (“Bauxite residueBauxite residue” OR “Red mudRed mud”) AND (reuse OR valorizationValorization OR utilization OR cement OR concrete OR geopolymer OR adsorbent) on the Web of Science platform, covering a 30-year period (1995–2024). A total of 1,539 articles were eligible for quantitative analysis, and 50 for categorical and descriptive analysis. Globally, the publications show an exponential increase over the period, with 64.52% concentrated in the last 5 years, indicating growing interest in the topic. In Brazil, no clear trend was observed, and annual publications are recorded from 2010 onward. ChinaChina is the leading country in the analyzed dataset (810 articles), while Brazil ranks fifth with 61 studies. Categorization of the 50 analyzed articles revealed that bauxite residueBauxite residue is predominantly used to produce functional materials (adsorbents and catalysts). Other applications include cement production, construction materials in general, soil application, and element recovery. Many studies are conducted at the laboratory scale, and authors highlight the limited applicability of these findings at larger scales. Among the challenges identified are the lack of cost–benefit analysis and technical feasibility issues. The data obtained in this research will serve as a foundation for future studies.
