Science Museums in Support of School Laboratory Work
摘要
Laboratory work is recognized as essential for promoting students’ learning in science education, but in schools it is often limited due to infrastructure constraints and curriculum restrictions. Non-formal institutions, namely science museums, can complement and extend school-based laboratory work due to the diversity of educational opportunities that they provide. These include hands-on areas, object areas, science labs, maker-spaces, and science shows. Despite the extensive research available on field trips to science museums, little is known on how students experience laboratory activities in these institutions, and even less on how such experiences impact school learning. The fact that the main gain of a field trip to a science museum is at the motivational level has led researchers to pledge for long-term collaborations between museums and schools to enhance science learning. Based on the existing literature regarding ‘third spaces’ in science education, this chapter discusses the role of science museums in supporting laboratory work to enrich school learning.
