French is a literary language of a minority of Indian writers, partly owing to the presence of the French Empire in India. However, this facet of multilingual India is invisible in official representations of the nation’s linguistic diversity. By casting light on the Indian Francophone writing of Pondicherrian writer Ari Gautier, this chapter explores how literature may offer an alternative vision of India’s linguistic diversity compared to official representations. It argues that Gautier’s works expose minority languages of India which are obscured in official language surveys, and it investigates how India’s language hierarchies and politics are both interrogated and reimagined in Gautier’s writing. The chapter also examines the role which writers and translators may play in contributing to official representations of India’s linguistic diversity in the future.

摘要
